Evidence over Narrative
Our investment philosophy, in our own words.
The Avelorn thesis
Markets reward those who see clearly and act with discipline.
Avelorn is an investment firm combining advances in technology with years of trading experience. We believe financial markets are complex adaptive systems — shaped by fundamentals, liquidity, incentives and, above all, human behavior. No single model captures that complexity, and no single discipline is sufficient to navigate it.
Our edge is synthesis. We bring artificial intelligence, applied mathematics, behavioral psychology and traditional finance into a single, data-driven process — where each discipline checks the others — with one objective: to seek attractive risk-adjusted returns across full market cycles, rather than strong returns only in favorable ones.
Pattern recognition at scale
Artificial Intelligence
Modern markets generate more information in a day than a team of analysts could read in a lifetime. We use machine learning to process that breadth — price and volume microstructure, fundamentals, text, and alternative data — and to surface relationships that are too subtle, too nonlinear or too fleeting for traditional analysis.
But financial data is noisy, non-stationary and adversarial. So we treat AI as a disciplined research instrument, not an oracle: every model must be explainable enough to trust, robust out-of-sample, and economically sensible before it touches capital.
- Strict separation of training, validation and live data
- Ensembles over single models; stability over peak accuracy
- Continuous monitoring for decay and regime drift
The language of uncertainty
Applied Mathematics
Investing is decision-making under uncertainty, and mathematics is how we make uncertainty precise. Probability theory, statistics, stochastic modeling and optimization translate ideas into expected distributions of outcomes — and those distributions into position sizes, hedges and portfolios.
We care less about predicting the single most likely outcome and more about understanding the full shape of risk: the tails, the correlations that change under stress, and the cost of being wrong.
- Position sizing grounded in expected value and drawdown tolerance
- Portfolio construction that accounts for shifting correlations
- Statistical rigor that corrects for multiple testing and overfitting
Markets are made of people
Behavioral Psychology
Prices are set by people — and people are predictably imperfect. Loss aversion, overconfidence, herding, anchoring and recency bias create persistent mispricings as investors overreact to vivid news and underreact to slow-moving evidence.
Behavioral insight works in two directions for us. Outwardly, it helps us identify where crowd behavior pushes prices away from value. Inwardly, it shapes a process deliberately designed to protect our own decisions from the same biases, especially when markets are most emotional.
- Pre-committed rules for entries, exits and risk limits
- Structured decision reviews that separate process from outcome
- Sentiment and positioning as measurable, modelable inputs
Anchored in economic reality
Traditional Finance
Beneath every signal is a business, a balance sheet and a cash flow. Our processes and strategies focus on the fundamental value and analysis of companies and their associated financial instruments — because over time, prices gravitate toward economic substance.
Years of trading experience inform how we read that substance: how liquidity behaves, how instruments are actually priced and executed, and how theory meets the friction of real markets.
- Fundamental valuation as a check on every quantitative signal
- Execution discipline that respects liquidity and transaction costs
- Instrument selection across equities, options, derivatives and alternatives
Guiding principles
What we believe.
Six convictions that shape every strategy, position and decision at Avelorn.
Risk comes before return
Return is only meaningful relative to the risk taken to earn it. We define, measure and budget risk first — then seek the best return available within it.
Evidence over narrative
Compelling stories are cheap. We act on hypotheses that survive rigorous testing, and we abandon those that don’t — however elegant.
Humility in every model
All models are simplifications. We assume ours will eventually be wrong, and build portfolios that can withstand it.
Diversify ideas, not just assets
True diversification comes from independent sources of return — distinct signals, horizons and instruments — not simply more holdings.
Process is the product
Consistent long-term performance comes from a repeatable, systematic process — applied with the most discipline when it is hardest to do so.
Patience is an edge
In fast markets, the willingness to wait for asymmetric opportunities is scarce — and therefore valuable.
From idea to allocation
A process built to be repeatable.
Hypothesis
Every strategy begins with an economic or behavioral rationale for why an opportunity should exist.
Research
We gather and clean data, engineer features and model the idea across instruments and regimes.
Validation
Out-of-sample and stress testing, with explicit corrections for overfitting and data-mining bias.
Construction
Signals are combined, sized and hedged into portfolios optimized for risk-adjusted return.
Oversight
Live risk monitoring, execution review and ongoing research ensure strategies remain fit for purpose.
The goal is not to predict the future perfectly. It is to be positioned well across the many futures that could unfold.
